Holistic Nursing is a forerunner of a major paradigm shift in all of healthcare. It is not simply the integration of complementary care practices into nursing care and care of the self but rather a deeper order change in the very assumptions and beliefs which underlie healing and healthcare practices. This one day workshop will offer lecture and discussion of the beliefs and concepts which support this unfolding shift in healthcare consciousness as we come to better understand the unity of bodymindspirit
and the implications of this for radically different healthcare education and practice. Come explore what Holistic Nursing REALLY is!
About the Presenter
Dr. Barbara Joyce is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric- Mental Health and Holistic Nursing. She earned both her Masters degree in Child-Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing and her PhD degree in Nursing at New York University. She is a Professor Emerita at Adelphi University and the former Chairperson of the Graduate Nursing Programs at The College of New Rochelle where she co-created the first Masters degree program in Holistic Nursing in the country. Dr. Joyce is also a Past- President of the New York State Nurses Association. In addition to her work as a clinician,
educator and leader, Dr. Joyce has also served as a consultant to numerous
health care and educational systems. She is currently in full time private practice as the Creatrix of Hestia's Hearth – Center for the Conscious Creation of Unity where she practices psychotherapy, Polarity Therapy, Therapeutic Touch, Reiki and conducts retreats and educational programs for spiritual development.

About the Presenter
Karen Chmiel is a Certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse. She has a BS from SUNY Stony Brook School of Nursing and received her Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing certification from Abbott -Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN . She has been a Wound, Ostomy and Continence care nurse at Stony Brook University Medical Center since 1989. Besides having her certification as a Legal Nurse Consultant from C.W. Post, Karen is a clinical preceptor for the Wicks and Associates School of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Education in Harrisburg, PA, and also for the Wound, Ostomy and Continence education program at Emory University

Legal Issues in Nursing

This workshop provides an overview of the legal process and an introduction to the legal issues nurses face in their clinical practice. Case examples and case analysis methods discussed in class will provide nurses with information on risk management and patient advocacy strategies that positively impact health care delivery.
About the Presenter
Carol Lynn Esposito, JD, RN is currently an Associate Director for the New York State Nurses Association's Economic & General Welfare Department. There, she manages and supervises a team of representatives whose responsibilities include meeting the educational and collective bargaining needs of professional registered nurses throughout New York and New Jersey. She is also responsible for the procuring and administering of educational grants and the production of educational products on various health and safety topics.
Ms. Esposito received her JD from Brooklyn Law School and her Baccalaureate degree from Adelphi University. She has been an affiliated instructor at Hofstra University where she taught Introduction to Law, Civil Litigation, Risk Management, Medical Malpractice and Birth Injuries through the University College of Continuing Education. She is currently adjunct faculty at Adelphi Universities School of Nursing, where she has taught Legal Issues, Ethical Issues, Collective Bargaining, and Health Issues, Policy & Politics in Healthcare. She has worked for several malpractice firms both on Long Island and in New York City.
Ms. Esposito has been an honorarium speaker for various schools of nursing and professional organizations. She has authored articles on Informed Consent and Malpractice Insurance, and has developed course and text materials for the National Center for Professional Development. She has practiced as a medical/surgicaland cardiac nurse.

About the Presenter
Janet Raman has provided nursing care to culturally diverse populations for over 30 years. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Farmingdale State College and an Adjunct Professor here, at the Adelphi School of Nursing, as well as an officer in our local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.

About the Presenters
Maryanne Bezyack is founder and President of MEB Communications, an organization that was developed over 20 years ago to assist and encourage professionals to write and publish. Maryanne received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Nassau Community College, a BSN from California State University, and an MSN from Seton Hall University. She has been an Assistant Professor of Nursing at both Monmouth University and Stony Brook University, where she was also the Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs. Maryanne was the founding editor of the NY/NJ edition of Nursing Spectrum. She has had numerous publications, speaking engagements and consultations, and has been profiled on radio and television programs. She also served as nurse consultant for ABC-TV's General Hospital. An activemember of Sigma Theta Tau, Maryanne founded the Kappa Gamma chapter at Stony Brook, and has received the prestigious Media Award for Excellence in Nursing Journalism from Sigma. She has been named to both the Sigma Distinguished Writers Program and the Distinguished Lecturer Program Maryanne enjoys workingwith both new and seasoned writers.
Dr. Jane White has a D.N.Sc. in Psych-Mental Health and Nursing Education from Catholic University of America, a M.S.N. from University of Alabama, and a B.S.N (1976) from Purdue University. She earned a Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate (2005) from Georgetown University. Since 2001, Dr. White has been Executive Director of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and since 2002 she has been an Adjunct Full Professor at the Catholic University of America School of Nursing. Prior to these positions she was a full professor, with tenure, at the Catholic University of America School of Nursing. She is a Board Certified Specialistin Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing and is currently licensed as an Advanced Practice nurse in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia. Dr. White has twenty-seven publications in peer reviewed journals, several book chapters, and other publications in newspapers. She has made many presentations and serves as a reviewer on the editorial board of three nursing journals.
Dr. David Keepnews, who was previously director of the Office of Policy Development at the New York Academy of Medicine, has taught at a number of nursing schools nationwide and served in a variety of capacities at several hospitals. His publications include commentaries and editorials, peer-reviewed journal articles, and a peer-reviewed book chapter. Dr. Keepnews is currently editor-in-chief of Policy, Politics & Nursing Practice. He holds a Ph.D. from Brandeis University; a J.D. and an M.P.H. from the University of California, and a B.S. from the University of San Francisco. Dr. Keepnews is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
