Graduate Retention Requirements

Adelphi’s retention requirements for graduate students.

  • This policy defines the academic grading requirements for progression and graduation from the program.
  • Students are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the program and must achieve a grade of B- or higher in all nursing courses (courses offered by the College of Nursing and Public Health). Students are placed on probation if their overall cumulative GPA drops below a 3.0.
  • If a grade of F is earned in any course, the student will be dismissed from the graduate program.
  • Core courses and specialty courses in which a student received a grade below a B- may be repeated once. Students must achieve a grade of B- or higher when the course is repeated.
  • For clinical courses in the nurse practitioner program, students who have earned a grade below a B- and are required to repeat either a didactic course or a clinical course for Nurse Practitioner I, II or III must repeat both the didactic and clinical courses. All clinical hours must be repeated.
  • Students who have not achieved a grade of B- or higher in any nursing course are prohibited from registering for any other courses until they repeat the course and receive a grade of B- or higher.
  • Students who have repeated a core course or specialty course and failed to achieve a grade of B- or higher will be dismissed from the program.
  • Students who have successfully repeated one core course or specialty core course will not be permitted to repeat a second course in which they failed to achieve a grade of B- or higher. Students who failed to achieve a grade of B- or higher in more than one core course or specialty core course will be dismissed from the program.
  • Each master’s student must take a written comprehensive exam designed specifically for his/her program of study.  The exams test students’ knowledge of the program’s course work as a means of determining candidates’ eligibility to graduate. Students must achieve a minimum of 70 percent to pass the exam.
