Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Post-Master’s Certificate Program

Adelphi’s Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMH-NP) post-M.S. certificate program is designed to educate nurses who have an MS degree and are NPs in another specialty to provide primary psychiatric and mental health care across the lifespan (child-adolescence through geriatric). Nurse Practitioners with an M.S.  who are certified in another specialty (i.e., adult-geriatric primary or acute care) can enroll is this post-master’s program enabling them to provide care to a wider population of clients. Careers for a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner include works in outpatient or community settings with clients experiencing psychiatric problems.

Graduates who complete certification are prepared to assess, plan and manage clients and families with psychiatric diagnoses, providing psychopharmacology, counseling and therapy interventions. Certificate completion graduates are licensed in NY and are prepared to take the national certification exam for PMH-NPs.

What will I study?

Students enroll in psychiatric-mental health specialty courses including advanced practice role and psychopharmacolgy. Clinical courses focus on the mental health of individuals (adults, children and adolescents) and families. The program includes courses on clients with substance use disorders and community mental health and crisis care such as within an emergency department. The 19-credit part time program requires 500 hours of precepted clinical experience.

Who are the faculty members?

Doctorally prepared faculty are expert clinicians certified in the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specialty who conduct research on psychiatric topics such as substance abuse, PTSD and eating disorders.

 How much will it cost?

Tuition is $1,210 per credit. The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner post-master’s certificate program is 19 credits. University and technology fees are additional.

How do I apply?

In addition to a completed application for graduate admission and application fee, applicants must submit:

  • New York State R.N. license
  • Official transcripts showing a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and B or above in all science and nursing classes
  • Final transcript documenting bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
  • M.S. degree from an accredited program; as an NP in another specialty
  • Résumé
  • A 500-word, typed essay on your reasons for applying to the program
  • Two letters of recommendation, preferably from master’s or above and/or direct supervisor, employer or former faculty
