Martha DeRose (née Fuqua) '49
Nurse

Professional Career:
After graduating from Adelphi’s School of Nursing in 1949, Martha DeRose began working as night relief for scrub nurses in the operating room, until she was eventually promoted to assistant supervisor of the operating room. Following this role, Mrs. DeRose held the position of assistant supervisor at a private 100-bed psychiatric hospital.
Mrs. DeRose also worked as a school nurse, and eventually returned to school herself. She attended Teachers College, Columbia University, "where Dr. Montag saw me result with a master’s degree in nursing education." After she and her husband moved to California, Mrs. DeRose worked in the Los Angeles County Schools, and taught nursing to small medical groups in the summer. She was also involved in parish nursing for Lutheran Churches in California.
When and why did you first want to become a nurse?
I didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school. I remember my Aunt Ella encouraging me to try nursing at a young age. During my high school years I was a candy striper and public health nurse volunteer. Dr. Mildred Montag gave me the opportunity to be a cadet nurse; I applied for admission and chose to pursue nursing at Adelphi.
Do you have favorite memories of your time at Adelphi?
I especially enjoyed the orientation before classes started. I loved dorm living, in those beautiful two-bedroom East Dorms. I have great memories of activities in Woodruff Hall, as well as in drama, music, and the library. I fondly remember the faculty and the small group evening discussions I was involved in. I met so many wonderful classmates and people at Adelphi.
I remember professors Anderson and Deslier to be very good teachers. While I was fond of my psychology and sociology courses, science was my true love.
Ruth Harley’s door was always open. The wonderful courses she included in our curriculum not only added to our education at Adelphi, they added to our lives.
My Adelphi nursing degree prepared me excellently for my career. Adelphi provided us with thorough training at a highly professional level, and we gained a great background in science. Upon graduation, I was immediately employed with a good choice of job offers.
What advice would you give to today’s nursing students?
Stay in contact with classmates and make social, as well as professional, networks when you become employed.
Publish if possible, while continuing to study new advances.
Have a support system lined up in advance.
Live, love...and love life.
